Ketamine Hydrochloride Injection, USP – Anesthetic & Sedative for Oral Surgery

Description:
Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic agent known for its rapid onset, profound analgesia, and preservation of airway reflexes. In oral surgery, Injectable Ketamine is valued for providing deep sedation or general anesthesia, particularly in complex or lengthy procedures, or in patients who may not tolerate other anesthetics well.

Formulation:
Available in various concentrations (e.g., 10 mg/mL, 50 mg/mL, 100 mg/mL), Ketamine Injection is supplied in sterile, preservative-free vials for intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) administration.

Clinical Use in Oral Surgery:
Ketamine is commonly utilized in surgical dentistry for procedures such as impacted tooth extractions, maxillofacial surgeries, or in cases requiring extensive debridement or implant placement. It is particularly beneficial in patients with high anxiety, low pain tolerance, or when deeper sedation is desired without compromising airway stability.

Key Benefits:

  • Rapid onset of action (typically within 30 seconds IV, 3–4 minutes IM)

  • Provides strong analgesia and sedation with minimal respiratory depression

  • Maintains cardiovascular stability – ideal for patients with compromised hemodynamics

  • May be used alone or in combination with benzodiazepines to reduce emergence reactions

Administration & Monitoring:
Ketamine must be administered by trained professionals in environments equipped for sedation and anesthesia monitoring. Continuous observation of respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurologic status is required. Dose titration should be based on procedural needs and patient response.

Warnings and Considerations:

  • May cause hallucinations or emergence reactions; co-administration with Midazolam is common to reduce this risk

  • Use with caution in patients with elevated intracranial pressure, psychiatric disorders, or cardiovascular disease

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Ketamine

  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy unless clearly necessary
