Description:
Propofol is a short-acting intravenous general anesthetic used for the induction and maintenance of anesthesia or sedation. Known for its rapid onset and smooth recovery profile, Propofol is commonly used in surgical settings, including oral and maxillofacial procedures, where controlled sedation or full anesthesia is required.

Formulation:

• Active Ingredient: Propofol

• Concentration: Commonly available as 10 mg/mL (1%) emulsion

• Packaging: Single-use vials or prefilled syringes in various volumes (e.g., 20 mL, 50 mL)

• Appearance: White, oil-in-water emulsion

Clinical Applications:
Propofol is indicated for:

• Induction of general anesthesia

• Maintenance of anesthesia in surgical or diagnostic procedures

• Sedation of intubated, mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care settings

• Monitored anesthesia care (MAC), including use in oral surgery and outpatient procedures

Warnings and Precautions:

• Use with caution in patients with hypotension or compromised cardiac function

• Not approved for use in pediatric patients under the age of 3 for anesthesia, or in any pediatric ICU setting

• Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to propofol or its components (e.g., egg or soy derivatives)

• Not recommended during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary
